Fans who tried to access the official Power Rangers website yesterday morning were likely greeted with a “server not found” error message. The end-result of the downtime is the addition of a new section to the official website, known as emPOWER.
EmPOWER is part public relations, part community service, and part social media, and is designed for parents and children in grades K-3. According to the official website:
EmPOWER inspires participation in schools, online and in local communities to demonstrate the Power Rangers values in action: teamwork, confidence, health and physical activity, friendship and caring. emPOWER will launch with a focus on health and physical fitness in February, 2011. The emPOWER Movement is positive and fun, emphasizing kids’ strengths and potential, and providing kids and parents with accessible resources.
The emPOWER section of the official Power Rangers website will feature fitness tips, a “Ranger of the Week,” nominated by parents on the emPOWER Facebook page, and an “emPOWER schools” section, which will deliver gym class kits and fitness guides to over 4,500 U.S. elementary schools between January and February of this year. Each school is also entered to win a visit from the Rangers and a $10,000 dollar donation to the school’s physical education program.
While the official Power Rangers Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube pages have been up for some time now, emPOWER appears to be the franchise’s first foray into social media focusing strictly on the show’s primary target audience.
